2.4   What's your Password

Productivity hack no.20 from '60 Ways to Hurray! by Ralph Varcoe.

How many passwords do you have? If you’re smart it will be the same number as the number of websites you have an account for. So how many websites and Apps have you ever signed up to? Hundreds I’ll bet.

I am guessing but you probably don’t have 100 unique passwords. You may have the really secure one for the important sites/Apps, and then a generic kind for everything else. Some of those will want you to have a special character as well as capitals and numbers, others won’t let you. Then there are websites where you used to have a password you could remember but you forgot it and had to reset, forcing you to create another password that’s probably just a variant of your normal one that you’re bound to remember, only you can’t when you next need it so you have to reset again.

“Aha! “You cry, “Google remembers my passwords and so do my smartphone apps.” Indeed, but what when there’s an app upgrade or you clear the cache on Chrome? Or when Google gets hacked?

I cannot remember all my passwords and I used to waste time trying to guess and then locking myself out, only to eventually have to reset and gain access 20 minutes after I wanted to use it. Such a waste of time and effort.

If you want to reclaim time, thereby improving your productivity, AND be so much more secure you should get a password manager.

There are plenty around but the one I recommend is LastPass (LastPass.com). It’s free for 1 user or you can pay £2.33 per month for the ability to share between your devices and get back-up. For very little extra a month (£3.50 in total) you can get a family edition which allows you to have 6 family members use it with their own accounts.

LastPass has one super-password that’s so super-impossible to crack and then it manages all passwords across sites for you. You don’t have to remember any passwords ever again, except the super one.

This simple (and, for me, free) step has saved me so much time.
