In this post, we delve into the fascinating world of NLP - not natural language processing, which you may have encountered in the realm of artificial intelligence, but Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, might sound complex, but it's essentially about understanding how we think and communicate. Let's break it down:
- Neuro relates to the mind and nervous system, encompassing how we process experiences using our five senses: visual, auditory, kinaesthetic (feelings), olfactory (smell), and gustatory (taste). While all senses play a role, memories are predominantly stored and recalled through visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic systems.
- Linguistic refers to the language, both verbal and non-verbal, that shapes our experiences and communications. Certain words evoke visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic responses, reflecting how our minds associate language with sensory experiences.
- Programming involves the sequence in which we do things, akin to computer programming. Just as computers run programmed sequences, our brains develop patterns based on our experiences from birth. These patterns influence how we perceive and act in the world.
NLP is about using the mind's language to achieve desired outcomes, transforming thought patterns, and opening avenues for personal growth. Originating from the work of Richard Bandler, John Grinder, and Frank Pucelik, it combines elements from various disciplines, including gestalt therapy, hypnosis, and behavioral psychology.
NLP’s applications are vast and varied, extending across:
- Business: Enhancing management, sales, customer service, negotiation, conflict resolution, teamwork, and leadership skills.
- Coaching: Assisting in setting goals, boosting confidence, dismantling limiting beliefs, and overcoming obstacles.
- Education and Sports: Improving teaching methods and sporting performance through understanding cognitive patterns.
- Health: Addressing issues such as stress, anxiety, and lifestyle changes like quitting smoking through hypnosis and reframing techniques.
- Modeling Excellence: Learning from the best in any field to replicate success.
- Language Patterns: Utilizing specific and vague language to influence both conscious and subconscious thought.
- Eye Patterns: Understanding how people access memories and construct ideas through eye movement, aiding in comprehension of their thinking processes.
In the 1970s, NLP emerged in the context of the human potential movement. Bandler and Grinder’s pioneering work, such as "The Structure of Magic" and exploration of figures like Milton Erickson, shaped NLP’s methodologies. Concepts like synesthesia patterns, embedded commands, and timeline therapy further enriched the discipline. By unlocking the psychology of excellence and fostering subconscious transformation, NLP empowers individuals to break free from limiting patterns and redefine their paths.

Model excellence for consistent results
NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is a versatile set of tools and techniques that allow you to create quick, effective and lasting change and consistently produce your desired results.
NLP was created in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. Having studied a number of people who excelled in their fields of communication, therapy, behaviour and psychology they created a number of models, which others could use to replicate the excellent behaviour in themselves and others.
NLP is an amazing instruction manual with a blueprint of how to use your mind, allowing you to achieve excellent results quickly and easily in both your personal and professional lives.
But it’s more than just a set of tools and techniques; it is also an attitude and a methodology. A curious mind and willingness to change will see you accelerate your ability to change into the best version of you yet.
Neuro - is all about how we filter the world through our senses and nervous system
Linguistic - is all about how we use language to code and convey our thoughts with precision or imprecision
Programming - is how we code our values, beliefs, and motivators to achieve
If you want a formal definition of NLP, here you go:
"NLP is the study of the structure of subjective experience. It is both an attitude and a methodology that leaves a trail of techniques. The methodology centres around the modelling of excellence."
Translated, this means that brilliant practitioners in the field of the mind and communication have been studied, and the most excellent things they do have been modelled so that there is a set of truly practical techniques that we can all use in our daily lives to improve the way we think and live.
NLP is truly transformative. Just ask anyone who uses the techniques on a daily basis or who has had NLP Coaching.
We think our courses and coaching are great, but our customers should have the last word. Here is a selection of endorsements.
